ACTC 2009 Entry Forms

There's been the usual good response so far from competitors sending me their 2009 ACTC Entry Forms, but the flow is starting to dry up. Remember that I've already sent out two sets of labels for 2009 events so if you want to get on the new list please get your forms and cheques back to me as soon as possible.
I shall at the hardy Trial on Sunday if you want to save on the postage. Look out for the blue Troll.
If you were not a member last year then the 2009 Entry Form is on the ACTC website.
We're particularly short of motorcycle returns at this stage.

Propshaft Angle

Just wondered what sort of height distance people get away with between gearbox and axle - having swapped the engine in my SWB Marlin I have quite a difference in height between the two, also as I have a long MG gear box, my propshaft will end up quite short which is not going to help the angle. I guess taking the lowering blocks out has also dropped the relative position of the axle. I have read all the theoretical stuff on the web, but wondered what peoples practical experience was. For those who have Marlins it would be interesting to know at what it is like on other cars.

MSA licence fees

I just checked with the MSA that I had read my 2009 comp licence renewal form correctly. For a non-race Clubman it is 짙23, fair enough. After a heart attack five years ago I am now quite healthy and was discharged by my doctor after a few months. Like many other older triallers, I am prescribed a beta-blocker (a banned substance) for which my doctor is happy to sign the required exemption form so I can continue competetive trialling. Still fair enough, BUT the MSA wants 짙44 just for admin fees for processing the exemption certificate. Apart from sounding exhorbitantly expensive for a simple clerical task it also sounds discriminatory to me.
So people on medication are required to pay more to compete than others? My doctor has established the safety of using prescribed medication in motorsport and signed to say it is safe for me so what does the £44 pay for? Even if the clerical task is overseen by a medically qualified person, how much can reading one exemption form cost the MSA?
I did not ask the nice chap on the MSA telephone to justify the cost, I'm sure the office workers don't set the level of fees.

Yours in a ripped-off state of mind

John

What future for PCT's

I wonder if I could have some feedback on a situation that has developed over the last few years, please?
I have Clerked for my local A&P club for many years, organising club PCT's most years, that culminate in our National 'B' round of a ten round regional championship and also the ANCC championship too. I have also competed and Clerked in the once hugely popular Ilkley club and national PCT's too. Lately the entries have dwindled to the point where MSA events have had to be cancelled due to having less than a half dozen applicants. Is this a nation-wide trend?

When people could run a trials car as a shopping car, Escort, Nova, etc, there seemed to be no problem but as tyres have grown wider and skirts have become integrated with the bodywork, entries have fallen dramatically. The opportunity to run a suitable car exists if you are prepared to buy an older vehicle and trailer it around but it is often a car dedicated wholly to liesure purposes. In fact, there is little difference between owning, storing, towing and maitaining a PCT car from that of classic triallers or sporting triallers. So I would say that PCT's are no longer a 'Grass-roots introduction to motorsport'. (I know they are no longer called PCT's but how much more confusing can the MSA legislation get)?

We have tried to dumb-down the sections so the alloy wheels don't get scratched but there is so little challenge in what is left that we, unsurprisingly, got few entries.

What is the situation in the rest of the world?

Northern Classic

If you have already read the latest Restart you will know that The Northern will not run in 2009. With a committe of only 5, loosing 2 members who were the main organising force, left the others in a difficult position and the remaining three decided that we were not able or sufficiently knowledgeable to take on the organisation and do a good job of it. Other club members are located throughout the North and whilst there was a good deal of enthusiasm and valued input in our discussions it would be very difficult for them to be able to take on organisational duties. Reports that a specific team are already in place are premature but we are strenuously looking for a group of people that can do the trial justice and keep it in the position it has gained. However the comment in Restart that "..it WILL return in 2010, brighter and better than ever" does not necessarily recognise the success of the trial to date, nominated as Trial of the Year for 2006 and gaining Trial of the Year for 2007.Any team taking over the trial will have to be pretty good to beat that!
However for all the Northern supporters, be assured that we are making all our best efforts to continue the running of the Northern in the future with a dedicated team that can do it justice.
